This book is a collection of 80 entertainment posters from England which were produced during the last twenty years of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century. In the history of popular entertainment, none is more recognized than the British Music Hall. This selection of posters, from the archives of the Public Record Office at Kew, takes us back to an era when novelty vaudeville acts were all the rage and lavish theatrical productions were prevalent. Fun Without Vulgarity is also a history of this type of entertainment, showing, through poster reproductions, how trends and attitudes changed, and how theatrical managers kept up and offered the public what it wanted. Poster designers, heavily influenced by the French style, created a new art form which combined fine art and popular culture, yet maintaining simplicity. After all, these posters were advertising and had to appeal to the general public. Audiences were thrilled at the wide potpourri of acts, including the underwater antics of "The Aquatic Acrobats" and the amazing dental athletics of "The beautiful Florences." And to a prim and proper Victorian audience, what could be more titillating than "The Slave Girl" or "A Disgrace To Her Sex"? It's all represented in Fun Without Vulgarity, from circuses and novelty acts (Check out "The Ugliest Woman on Earth." Look Children, Don't Turn Away!) to melodramas ("The Slave Girl. She's A Woman! She's A Slave!") and Pantomime. Also, there're posters from the great English theatre of the day, from William Gillette in Sherlock Holmes to the Gilbert and Sullivan productions from the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. Each poster is beautifully reproduced in full-color, recreating a moment in time that was truly the Golden Age of Show Business.
