London Grub Street 1998 1898697728 / 9781898697725 First Edition Hardcover New in New dust jacket 8 3/4" x 10 1/4"
New, unread, mild shelf wear. Mylar protected DJ.Illustrated with over 120 b&w photographs, many published in this book for the first time. Air historian Norman Franks and WWI enthusiast Hal Giblin examine the complete records of four of Germany's First World War flying aces in order to profile the Allied airmen—British, French and American—they fought. 124 victories are recorded and analyzed, with accompanying photographs, maps and artwork. The four men profiled are: Max Immelmann, the famed "Eagle of Lille", who accounted for 17 British and French aeroplanes in the early days of air fighting, flying the nimble Fokker Eindekker in 1915-1916. Werner Voss, the mercurial member of the two famous fighter units, Jasta 2 and Jasta 5, and finally commander of Jasta 10. In 1917 he scored 45 of his 48 victories before falling to the pilots of 56 Squadron in what has become the known as the classic dog fight of the First War. The infamous Hermann Göring, later more widely recognized as head of the German Luftwaffe in WWII, he was nevertheless an ace fighter pilot, seeing action throughout the war. He gained 22 victories and rose to command the premier German air fighting unit, Jagdgeschwader No 1. Lothar von Richthofen, the Red Baron's younger brother, who flew with and later commanded Jasta 11. Far more reckless than his older brother, Lothar achieved 40 combat victories between 1917 and 1918, despite being wounded on several occasions. For their accomplishments, these four men were all awarded Germany's highest award for bravery in action, the famed "Blue Max."; 192 pages
