1 Nomis, Leo; Cull, Brian The Desert Hawks: An American Volunteer Fighter Pilot's Story of Israel's War of Independence, 1948
London Grub Street 1998 1898697825 / 9781898697824 Hardcover New in New dust jacket 6" x 9"
Unread, unmarked, pristine. 16 pages of b&w photos. Contains appendices, index and further reading list. Although not Jewish, Leo Nomis volunteered in 1948 to fight with the Israeli Air Force in its struggle against its Arab neighbors and became one of the legendary "Desert Hawks." Lomis was the son of a World War I instructor pilot who was killed in a flying accident in 1932. He volunteered to join the RAF in 1940 to fight against the Germans. He served with distinction, first with the 71 Squadron in the UK, then with 229 Squadron at Malta and 92 Squadron in the Middle East before transferring in 1943 to the 57th Group of the 9th USAAF. Nomis has written a highly evocative and extremely frank account of his and his unit's exploits, based upon journal notes he maintained during his time in Israel. Gripping as a novel at times, this is a fitting tribute to all those "foreign volunteers" who helped change the course of history in the Middle East.; 128 pages
