Mcindoes Army: The Story of the Guinea Pig Club and Its Indomitable Members, Bishop, Edward
1 Bishop, Edward Mcindoes Army: The Story of the Guinea Pig Club and Its Indomitable Members
London Grub Street 2001 1902304934 / 9781902304939 Hardcover New in New dust jacket 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"
Unread with minimal shelfwear. 16 pages of b&w photographs. Appendices. Index. The Guinea Pig Club is a unique body of grievously burned, often seriously disfigured and handicapped WWII Allied airmen who were under the care of acclaimed plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe. at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, England. In 2001, the Guinea Pig's Club's 60th Anniversary year, Edward Bishop revises and expands his perceptive account of these unique aviation heroes who had escaped from blazing, exploding and crippled bombers and fighter planes. Author Bishop tells the stories of these fighting men, from McIndoe's earliest war-time patients, and marvels at the way their courage and heroism gave them the hope to carry on with their lives, while displaying a delicate balance between candor, sympathy, horror and humor. And he lets many of the members tell their own stories in their own way and with previously unpublished photographs. McIndoe's Army is a totally rewritten version of The Guinea Pig Club, published by Macmillan in 1963!; 160 pages

New, unread, unmarked. B/W photos, index. Did the Allied bombing of Germany in World War Two needlessly brutalize and decimate a terrified civilian population? Or was it necessary to force the end of the most destructive conflict in history? Dan McCaffery seeks answers to these questions on both sides of the bombsights. The importance of the bomber command to the Allied victory has always been hotly debated. In Battlefields in the Air, McCaffery sets out to examine the role that bomber command played and to decide if Arthur Harris's strategy of area bombing was central or incidental to the Allied victory.Beginning with the Allies' early losses, the author describes how their position improved dramatically under the leadership of Harris. He discusses the bombing of the Ruhr dams, the raids on Hamburg, Berlin, Nuremberg, and Dresden, and he looks at the devastating effect that these campaigns had on the Germans.Relying on a wide range of sources, including interviews with Allied pilots and eyewitness civilian accounts, Battlefields in the Air offers a fascinating look at a dramatic chapter in World War Two. ; 196 pages

London Grub Street 1994 1898697043 / 9781898697046 First Edition Hardcover New in New dust jacket 6" x 9"
Unread, unmarked. 190 pages plus 16 pages of b&w photographs, 4 maps. Appendices. Index. Mick Ensor's life was more dramatic and exciting than most. Having learned to fly in New Zealand, Ensor joined 500 Squadron in 1941 and flew several dangerous operations over the North Sea and the French coast. He soon earned fame and the DFC when, in January 1942, he got a severely damaged Hudson home despite intense flak and appalling weather conditions. Following that, he haunted U-boats over the Atlantic and then took part in the Allied invasion of North Africa. Postwar he flew over 200 missions in the Berlin airlift and served for a couple of years with the US Navy, patrolling the Russian and Japanese coasts during the Korean War. An unprecedented and illuminating insight into a number of very different theatres of the air war, this is also a perceptive analysis of a flying man's struggle to come to terms with life outside the cockpit.

London Grub Street 1993 0948817704 / 9780948817700 First Edition Hardcover New in New dust jacket 6" x 9"
New, unread. 194 pages plus 16 pages of b&w photographs. Appendices. Index Tempest Pilot is a frank and honest, amusing, sometimes stark and bleak account of the author's flying experiences in Britain throughout WWII. Initially viewed by superiors as something of a 'prickly pear', he got results and ended the war as a squadron commander in Denmark with decorations to his name. His account sheds fascinating light on the antics and courage of New Zealand airmen flying Typhoons and Tempests with 485 and 486 Squadrons.
