The Hamble River and Much about Old Bursledon, Ritchie, Susannah
2 Ritchie, Susannah The Hamble River and Much about Old Bursledon
Horndean, England Milestone Publications 1984 0903852497 / 9780903852494 Reprint Paperback New
The Hamble River is one of the most crowded estuaries on the South Coast of England with hundreds of yachts on moorings and in the Marinas. This is Old Hampshire which also encompasses the two large ports of Southampton and Portsmouth. This is a guide to the Hamble River and its surrounding area, including the village of Bursledon. The Hamble flows into Southampton Water on the south coast of Hampshire, and its estuary is well known as a yachting center. The author gives details of this and also of the Hamble's prestigious history as a site of naval shipbuilding from 1338 to 1810. The book includes two maps and many illustrations. As far as local histories go this is a fantastic book. It is beautifully written and gives the reader a real sense of place. Although all black and white, it is really nicely produced with loads of old pictures. It contains lots about the boatbuilding past of the village of Bursledon and of life on a busy river. A must for people who live in the area or family came from there. Also for anyone interested in ship building and yachting it gives insights into some of the more important boats that came from Bursledon (including HMS Elephant - Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Copenhagen). For anyone who doesn't know, Bursledon was also the setting for Howard's Way in which it was renamed Tarrant! ; Down memory lane; 72 pages
